Cabinet list Yonai cabinet
Tenure as Prime Minster: 189 days.
Born in Iwate prefecture

A graduate of the Naval Academy, Yonai served in numerous important navy posts, becoming commander in chief of the Combined Fleet in 1936. As navy minister in the Hayashi Senjuro, the first Konoe Fumimaro, and the Hiranuma Kiichiro cabinets, he took a pro-American, pro-British stance and opposed alliance with the Axis powers. He became prime minister in January 1940 but in July was forced to step down because of pressure from the pro-Axis army. He served again as navy minister in several cabinets during and immediately after World War II and presided over the dissolution of the Japanese navy.
