Sven Saaler teaches modern Japanese history at the Faculty of Liberal Arts at Sophia University in Tokyo.
He has a Ph.D. from Bonn University (1999) and previously worked at the German Institute for Japanese Studies (DIJ) in Tokyo (1999-2004) and at The University of Tokyo (2004-2008) before coming to Sophia in 2008. During his student days, he spent several years in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture (1991-92 and 1996-99).
He has published extensively on issues of historical memory in Japan, Pan-Asianism and regionalism in modern East Asia, as well as Japanese-German relations.
“Politics, Memory and Public Opinion” (2005) dealt with the Japanese history textbook controversy, the Yasukuni Shrine issue and historical consciousness in Japan.
“Pan-Asianism in Modern Japanese History” (co-edited) was the first book-length publication on Pan-Asianism and historical issues of East Asian regionalism in English.
Sven Saaler has also co-edited/co-authored a volume introducing visual sources from the history of the Russo-Japanese War and another one introducing a wide range of visual sources from early Japanese-German relations, focusing on the second German envoy to Japan, Karl von Eisendecher (1841-1934, in Japan 1875-82). This volume was introduced in the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shinbun.
He has also organized a number of historical exhibitions and academic international conferences. The next large event will be a conference on 150 Years of Japanese-German Relations in December 2010.
